I happened to read what you said, Monty, about your friend. I hope TLC releases the new system this summer as well. I am very anxious to see what concept they have been working on. I can't wait to see the new conversion concept as well. I hope what ever TLC has come up with, it will have the same quality that they have been producing for all these years. When your friend mentioned that TLC was going to keep the 9V accessories going, did he say that they were keeping the motors & regulator alive as well? Or are they working on some kind of conversion concept for these as well? I really hope they aren't.

Thank you Monty for the news. This is very interesting and great to hear.

Model On!!
General :: Re: Just For Fun! http://save.9vtrains.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=696 http://save.9vtrains.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=696 Sun, 13 Jan 2008 01:50:40 +0000 By: Monty+Smith

Wow, these are some great questions! ;)

1 - I'd say they're kindof both. I like to build trains and locomotives to look as realistic as possible, despite being made out of (totally awesome) interlocking plastic bricks. I build lineside industries, I signal my layouts (they don't actually light up) and I like to do switching on occasion. But they can still be toys. Sometimes you just want to forget the operations and run a train in a (large, winding) circle. Its kindof like running Lionel trains with schedules and dropping off cars at the accessories; when you get down to it, they're toys. But nothing is wrong with that, is it?

2 - I do 6-wide, mainly because I think if I started doing 8-wides, I'd have to make alot of modifications to curves and layouts to accomodate the elongated locomotives and cars. But I am starting to put more details extending from the 6-wide frame, so bear with me for now :)

3 - I haven't mutilated very many bricks in my time. I've made crossovers by cutting two switches short and gluing them together, as well as turning a switch leg into a half-curve. I'm thinking about fashioning some custom crossings (45 degrees, 22.5 degrees, etc) but I'll have to see if I need to. Maybe even curved switches if a design calls for them. I've never cut a brick or glued bricks, it doesn't feel right. The entire idea of lego(I think) is to take the pieces you have and build something that comes as close as possible to the shape you want without cutting corners.
General :: Re: Just For Fun! http://save.9vtrains.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=695 http://save.9vtrains.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=695 Thu, 03 Jan 2008 07:21:34 +0000 By: Matthew+Harrington

Hello Monty,

I am a new member and I thought your questionaire would be fun. I consider Lego Trains more as a model train setup. I really think that with better marketing, Lego could have made the Trains line a competitor in the model railroad world. What better model railroading layout than one you actually build brick by brick.
I model in the 8-wide now. When I first got into the Trains line, I left them at the 6-wide scale. In the past couple of years though, I researched the 8-wide concept, built a prototype and found 8-wide to be more of a realistic scale. I have had to create a new curve concept to accommodate this scale so that the locomotives look more realistic and can handle the curve.
I would have to say that every 9V set I have no longer looks like the original. I actually have taken the parts from my train collection and I have modeled a GP60M, SD75M, DD40 and a GP50. I am no longer staying with the "Lego" look. I use books, model railroad catalogs and photos to help with my designing/building. I am at the point of my building that I want my locomotives & rolling stock to be as realistic as I can get it. I find modeling in this way to be so much more gratifying and enjoyable. Being able to look at a realistic locomotive, and model it to the best I can.
General :: Re: Just For Fun! http://save.9vtrains.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=694 http://save.9vtrains.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=694 Sun, 30 Dec 2007 22:09:56 +0000 By: George+Hammond

Hey Monty,

Amen! All business and no pleasure makes me sick. As answers for your questions go, Lego trains for me and my son now are falling on the toy side of the scale and they go 6 wide. I would have to say that I keep the main set, the 4534 set he has original but the couple of other engines and small cars that I have built for him are pure modifications and for expermineting. As a child of 8-10 years old long ago, I modified everything I had with Legos and was deep into it so much as that my bedroom was covered with bricks. The modifications paid off resulting in winning some Lego contests in the Philadelphia area and thus adding to my huge collection. Later into my teens I gave up the hobby as I focused more on school and other obligations and let the bricks go to my little sister. Had I realized that I could've kept the bricks and came back at a later date after having children of my own I'd be better off. Now I find myself starting over from scratch and am kicking myself repeatedly. Keep with it and don't ever give them up. You'll only regret it later. My plans now are to get my son rolling in the right direction and then starting my own building . I'm already planning out a future building project of historic Tiger Stadium in Detroit Michigan. Keep up the good work.
Introductions (Your Story) :: Re: Introductions! http://save.9vtrains.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=693 http://save.9vtrains.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=693 Sun, 30 Dec 2007 21:40:37 +0000 By: George+Hammond

Hello,

My name is George and am thirty eight and live in Michigan and I have a son who is five years old and just finding out how much fun legos can be. I recently purchased a set #4534 for him for Christmas and have been slowly accumulating bricks by the bunch from Ebay to help him build a nice city. He is very interested in trains and now Legos and I was disturbed to find out that Lego has decided to disband their 9v division. I eventually found my way here and would like you to know that I am willing to do my part to help keep the 9v hobby going. It's been a while since I was involved in the Lego hobby and am looking forward to watching my son carry on the torch and am also looking forward to sharing our creations in the future. Thanks.

:D
